Sac County sheriff files burglary charges

The Sac County Sheriff’s Office filed charges against Roy Steed Cope, 69, in connection with three burglaries that occurred in Odebolt.

According to Sac County Sheriff Ken McClure, Cope allegedly broke into Larry Beckman Motors and Mark Hansen’s Rex Chevrolet on April 30. Cope forced entry through a door at Larry Beckman Motors. Once inside, Cope damaged some file cabinets.

Cope is also alleged to have pried a shop window open at Mark Hansen’s and then forced entry into the business office. Damage to a window and an entry door occurred. Cope is also alleged to have cut the phone lines on both the shop and business office at Mark Hansen’s. A car was stolen from inside the shop at Mark Hansen’s.

Cope was apprehended driving this stolen car after he led Appanoose County Sheriff’s Deputies on a pursuit May 14. Evidence left at the scene of Mark Hansen’s connects this burglary to the one at Beckman Motors.

Cope has been charged with three counts of burglary in the second degree, two counts of criminal mischief, theft second and theft fifth. Cope is currently in the Appanoose County Jail in Centerville and will be extradited to Sac County at a later date. Cope’s bond is set at $30,300.

Cope is homeless and the investigation continues into additional criminal activity that spans from Minnesota to Appanoose County.
