The ODC would like to thank everyone who made this year’s “Kickin It Old School” Creek Days a success. Thank you to all who volunteered to work; to those who generously contributed a monetary donation to sponsor t-shirts; to those who loaned us equipment, picnic tables, bleachers, or property for our events; to the fire department, to the City of Odebolt for their support and cooperation; to the Odebolt Community Center board for use of the beautiful facilities; to those whom were not on the Odebolt Development Corporation but helped set up and tear down , and to odebolt.net and local newspapers for all of their help with publicity.
We want to thank the Odebolt Betterment Committee for putting on the breakfast this year. We want to also thank all the vendors who helped come and make our celebration a little more festive! Our parade coordinator Lisa Pierce, and our beer garden coordinators Ron & Jenny Sorensen also deserve a very special thank you; they make Creek Days possible. Finally, thanks to everyone who attended; we hope to see you all back next year!
The Odebolt Development Corporation would like to invite anyone in the community interested in joining our team to feel free to do so. You can contact Janet Hoefling or Jade Godbersen. Many current members have completed their final year on the board. Without board members Creek Days won’t be possible. Please consider joining the team today as they prepare for Creek Days 2014!
Thank you again,
The Odebolt Development Corporation

Jeff says: This past weekend, we celebrated the grand opening of the Iowa Rural Schools Museum in my hometown, Odebolt, Iowa. The schoolhouse, built in 1883, was moved from our farm to town a couple years ago, and after many months, it has been restored to preserve our heritage. My grandmother Margaret "Betty" (Shirk) Raasch was a teacher in a schoolhouse like this, and my mom Carol Skelton Raasch played a key role in the restoration project, along with many others. Check it out if you are in the area!

Iowa Rural Schools Museum Now Open
From KTIV
With renovations complete, Odebolt school museum unveiled in downtown
In 2011, an old building moved into downtown Odebolt, Iowa. From 1883 until 1951, it was a school house. Then, it became a 4H meeting place, before being converted into a livestock building on a farm. So, as you can imagine the years of wear and tear meant that restoring the old structure would take some work. Now, nearly two years later, those efforts are complete and the city is ready to show off its final product.

Museum Receives Award-Winning Photographs
The Odebolt Museum has acquired nine historic photographs of the Odebolt and Arthur vicinity. The 8 x 20 black and white photos were taken in the 1920's by A. B. Christenson and feature the Adams Ranch and some area activities.
The collection also includes an award-winning photo taken in 1923 of about 30 mule teams harvesting oats on the ranch. A. B. Christenson won $50 from the Des Moines Register for best agricultural photo of the year with that picture.
Arthur Christenson (1896-1979) was born near Kiron, Iowa, the youngest of ten children, and lived most of his life in the area, spending 14 years in Lyons, Kansas before retiring to Battle Creek in 1961. The pictures are given with permission by the family of his daughter, Bette (Christenson) Schmidt and her children, Dixie Brueck, Richard Schmidt, Jr., James Schmidt, Susan Schmidt, John Schmidt and Betsy Dettman.
The photos will be on display at the Odebolt Historical Museum during Odebolt Creek Days.
Lansinks are Winners of Good Farm Neighbor Award
Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey announced that Roger and Amy Lansink, who are turkey farmers from Odebolt in Sac County, have been named the June winners of the “Gary Wergin Good Farm Neighbor Award.”
Iowa Deputy Secretary of Agriculture Jay Johnson will present the award to the Lansink’s on Friday, June 14 at the Odebolt Community Center located at 116 E 2nd St. The “Big Show,” which airs on both WHO and WMT radio, will broadcast live from the presentation from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on June 14th.
“The Lansink family does a great job raising livestock and caring for the land while still actively supporting their community,” Northey said. “Since June is ‘National Turkey Lovers Month,’ it is great to be able to recognize one of our state’s outstanding turkey farmers with this award.”
The Lansink family raises turkeys for Hillshire Brands in Storm Lake and also raise corn, soybeans, barley and alfalfa on their farm. They are members of the Iowa Organic Association and have been raising crops organically for over twenty years, using the animal nutrients as natural fertilizer.
Roger and Amy were nominated for the award by Dan Roeder from Ida Grove, who grew up with both Roger’s and Amy’s families in the Odebolt area. In his nomination Roeder highlighted the importance the family places on caring for their animals.
“They take livestock production very seriously and never cut corners, animal welfare is their number one priority. Roger has adopted new technology and has made improvements to his turkey barns to help with better ventilation; this will keep the birds even more comfortable in the summers,” Roeder said.
In closing his nomination Roeder said, “The Lansink’s are caring, hardworking and honest people. They know how to care for their livestock, the environment, their community and their farm. We all benefit from them living and working here and being involved with our community.”
The Wergin Good Farm Neighbor award, made possible through the financial support of the Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers, recognizes Iowa livestock farmers who take pride in doing things right. This includes caring for the environment and their livestock and being good neighbors. It is named in memory of Gary Wergin, a long-time WHO Radio farm broadcaster who helped create the award.
Anyone interested in nominating their neighbor for the award should write a letter or e-mail explaining why their neighbor should receive this designation. Applications may be submitted to the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, Attn: Wergin Good Farm Neighbor Award, Henry A. Wallace Building, Des Moines, IA 50319 or emailed to Communications@iowaAgriculture.gov.

School Will Be Opening Soon!
Don’t panic, OABCIGers! You still have your summer vacation ahead of you!
What we mean is, the Iowa Rural Schools Museum of Odebolt will be officially opening its doors for visiting, viewing, and reminiscing!
The festivities will begin on Saturday, June 15th, at 10:30 a.m. with the Grand Opening Ceremonies directly outside of the School Building on Second Street of Odebolt. There will be a tent for the speakers and a number of folks and about 50 chairs will be provided. It might be wise to have a lawn chair along.
There will be presentations of folks who have been directly involved in the funding of the Rural Legacy Project through Grants and donations, those who have donated greatly their time, artifacts, and dollars to the cause of having a first class Rural Schools Museum, the unveiling of a beautiful statue, "Late to School", and dignitaries who will be able to be with us. Should the weather be an issue of comfort, we will conduct the proceedings in the Fire Station, a block away.
Also on tap for the weekend, is a get-together for ALL students of Country or Rural School in Iowa … not just this particular building … former teachers in any Country School, and the 4-Hers who had their meetings in Richland #1 after it “retired” from holding classes.
The event will be on June 14th, Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. in the First Presbyterian Church of Odebolt Fellowship Hall. We will have a light meal, a short presentation, and LOTS of reminiscing about “school days” in a Country School building.
Because of the meal preparations, we would ask you to call Jim Meyer at 668-4184 to make your reservations. We hope you will help us celebrate this momentous occasion!
Any Questions or comments, call Carol Raasch 712-668-4285.

There are no members, fees, and all information is public and the entire community is involved in each specific area. From young to old, non-hunters to hunters the excitement is the same. These projects bring families back together that once gathered to hunt, brings communities together, and also generates huge income for communities due to recreating huntable areas and bringing the hunters back. It also helps other wildlife.
Our goal - When the pheasants fly, it creates a black sky!
