February 7, 2011 Odebolt City Council meeting highlights

Wastewater Treatment Plant Improvements Project:  The City plans to construct a controlled discharge lagoon west of town with pump station and a 6000 foot force main to pump the water from the maintenance shed area to the site. The lowest bid from LeRoy and Sons, Arcadia, IA. in the amount of $1,751,268.50 was approved. (Read the minutes for intended financing of the project.)

Rural School Relocation to Downtown Greenspace Approved:  Sandy  Kessler Host was present to discuss the  restoration and re-location of  Richland #1 Schoolhouse.  She gave an extensive presentation of her work in locating original artifacts from the school. She is in the process of writing a book entitled “Iowa’s Lost Treasure – The Rural School System 1858-1953.”  Linda Godbersen, representing the Odebolt Betterment Committee, stated that they strongly support  the project. Fund-raising is already in progress and grants will be applied for.  Following the presentation and questions it was moved by Hoefling and seconded by Scott to approve locating the schoolhouse across the alley from the new Downtown Greenspace. Public Hearing:  March 7, 2011, 8:00 p.m. is the date and time for the Public Hearing on the FY12 Proposed Budget.

Sidewalk Grant: A committee from the City was established to work with the school on a sidewalk grant.  This will consist of Mayor Rex, Councilmen Bengford and Scott with Hoefling as an alternate and Supt. Bill Tysor.

  1. Adding Richland #1 school house to the west of the greenspace will compliment other historic sites in Odebolt ...

    - The Odebolt Museum
    - Peterson Pioneer home
    - The beautifully restored First State Bank
    - Curt Wareham's refurbished bank
    - The memorial circle
    - All the historic murals in the Community Center

    Most of the above are very near the greenspace. KUDOS to those working on this project!
