Academic All-State Nominee
Each year since 2010, schools have nominated students for The Des Moines Sunday Register Academic All-State. Each school official selects one graduating senior who stands out among his or her peers in all ways: academic, social and leadership. Register features editors choose two "outstanding students" from each of five geographical regions to feature here. Editors also choose six more students from each region to highlight.
Highlighted from the Northwest Region was OA-BCIG senior Cailin Carstensen with a class rank of 1/63 and a GPA of 4.06. She is the daughter of Kurt and Tammy Carstensen.
Chosen for Girls State
Lauren Beckman of Odebolt has been chosen to attend the annual session of the Iowa American Legion Auxiliary Girls State to be held June 16-21, 2013 on the campus of Iowa State University, Ames, IA.
Approximately 300 young women who have completed their junior year of high school will study city, county and state government processes.
Iowa Girls State citizens set up their own city, county and state governments and administer them according to the laws of Iowa.
The girls also participate in legislative sessions, campaigning, party rallies, debating and voting, along with learning more about parliamentary procedure.
In addition to their political activities, the girls hear several motivational speakers along with local and state government officials.
The culmination of the week on Friday evening, June 21, 2013 is the inauguration of the newly elected state officials. The inauguration program will be held at Stephens Auditorium on the campus of Iowa State University. The public is invited.
ONRC hosted an appreciation brunch for their many volunteers on April 25, with Jack Hogue as the guest speaker. Each volunteer received a plant to take home.
OA 5th Grade Plants Tree on Arbor Day
On April 26 the OA fifth grade gathered at the Odebolt Memorial Walk to plant a tree in commemoration of Arbor Day. Lorne Miller, a Resources conservation representative and a representative of Trees Forever, from Ida Grove, gave instructions and a demonstration as he actively planted a tree.
Each student took home a northern red oak to plant. They were supplied by the Ida Grove Pheasants Forever.
Accompanying the students were their teacher, Mrs. Judy Jepsen, and two para-educators, Shawna Davis and Mary Sorensen. Elaine Rex represented the Odebolt Memorial Walk Park Board.
