AVENUE OF THE FLAGS PROJECT
Two years ago the Odebolt Legion & Auxiliary decided to start a project of buying new nylon flags to begin replacing the cotton flags for the Avenue of Flags in Odebolt Cemetery. One reason for this was every year before Memorial Day some of the men had to take all of the flags out of the display boxes in the Post Office to fly in the cemetery and afterwards to refold them and put them back in the display boxes. That was quite a job each year.At that time the Legion & Auxiliary bought 50 new nylon flags. At the Legion's April meeting it was decided that we should send out letters to some of the Legion members who do not regularly attend our monthly meetings to see if they would help us finish this project before Memorial Day. And wouldn't you know it, those guys responded right away and were generous with their giving. We were able to buy 115 more new flags so all of the flags that will be flying in the Avenue of Flags will all be new nylon flags with a veterans name on it.
Last week Jim Scott, Elaine Hardin and Bob Hardin got the names from all the flags in the Post Office, which will now be permanently retired there. Then last Wednesday as the snow was flying, Jim and Joann Scott, Elaine and Bob Hardin worked in the Faith Lutheran church basement and transferred the names to the new nylon flags.
Please contact a Legion or Auxiliary member if you wish to help place our new flags at the cemetery prior to Memorial Day this year.
