Prairie Pedlar’s Kid’s Garden Club resumes

The Green Team, the Prairie Pedlar’s garden club for kids, will resume this summer after a 4-year hiatus, thanks, in part, to financial contributions from the P Buckley Moss Foundation. Funds from the sale of Pat’s artwork, Bouquets of Love, that depicts a scene of the Prairie Pedlar, will be invested in children’s garden tools, craft supplies and scholarship funds for needy students.

Children eight years old or older, who still love to play in the dirt are encouraged to join the “Green Team” to learn exactly what makes a garden grow. Regardless of each student’s level of experience, everyone is invited to the garden to learn and experience the fine art of gardening and enjoy nature crafts and flower fun.

A garden is one of the best outdoor classrooms of all, and we anticipate that as the children connect with the earth, they will grow deep, not just tall! Three Green Team events are scheduled for 2013. Each session will run from 8:30am – 11:30 am. The cost per session is $15 and participants may attend one, two or all three days. Registration is required and may be limited to a manageable size. Reservations will be honored on a first-come/first serve basis until the classes are filled.

Go to www.prairiepedlar.com for more information. Reservation forms can be obtained by contacting the Prairie Pedlar by email (jhogue@netins.net) or phone 712-668-4840.

Patten donates moose head

Anchorage resident Lex Patten donated a shoulder mount moose head to the USS Anchorage before its departure from the city on Monday. The Navy's newest warship, an amphibious transport dock, was in port for its commissioning ceremony, which took place on May 4. Patten said the gift was in honor of his late father, a World War II Navy veteran.

[Editor's note: The Patten family was living on a farm in Cook township near Odebolt when they attracted nation-wide attention for having six sons in the Navy. Two more sons and the father, Floyd Patten, joined later on, making a total of 9 members from the same family to serve at once in the U.S. Navy.  Read about the family from The Odebolt History Pages.]
