Free tax services available in Sac County

Free tax preparation by an IRS-certified volunteer is available in Sac County for the fifth year.  The Sac Partners for Progress has sponsored a VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) site since 2010 as part of their mission to help improve the quality of life for all citizens in the Sac City area.

The IRS will be ready for electronic filing in early February, so the Sac City VITA site will begin tax appointments on Feb. 9.

Staff members at the ISU Extension office in Sac City have agreed to help schedule appointments again this year; to make an appointment, call 712-662-7131. Most appointment times will fall on Sundays.

Most taxpayers with income reported on W-2 or 1099 forms can have their returns done by a VITA volunteer. Volunteers typically cannot prepare returns with business or self-employment income, rental income, or in certain other complex situations.

Food pantry in Holstein Jan. 16

The Community Basket Mobile Food Pantry will be at the Holstein Methodist Church Thursday, Jan. 16, with doors open at 4:30 p. m.

The Community Basket Mobile Food Pantry is made up of the seven communities of Arthur, Battle Creek, Galva, Holstein, Ida Grove, Kiron and Odebolt. The mobile pantry is held on the third Thursday of each month in one of the communities.

The mobile site continues to reach a larger group of people, as more people are facing food insecurity, especially as food stamps were cut across the board. In November, the Community Basket Mobile Food Pantry served 120-plus households and, in December, 139 households were served.

The Community Basket Food Pantry is located in the basement of the Medical Arts Building in Ida Grove. It is open from 1 -4 p. m. each Thursday. A household may use that site once a month, along with the mobile pantry.

The Community Basket Mobile Food Pantry is for people who are struggling with food insecurity. When you come to the mobile site, you are asked if you are above or below the guidelines, how many are in your household (adults/children) and which community you live in. No one is ever turned away.
