In 2014, I hope for:
• A mild winter
• Adequate rainfall
• No severe weather
• Bountiful crops
• Good health, happiness and prosperity for all
• Celebrations with family
• Good times with friends
• Fond memories of loved ones who have passed
• Overwhelming community pride
• People treating people as they would like to be treated themselves
• Smiling faces
• Plenty of laughter
• That feeling I always get while watching July 4 fireworks at Okoboji; a lump in my throat and a tear in my eye while listening to Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA” and Kate Smith’s “God Bless America.”

It’s not too late for a flu shot
Influenza A (H1N1) is the predominant strain of influenza in Iowa at this time. In Iowa, about two thirds of all laboratory con irmed cases of influenza have occurred in people five to 49 years old, and this age group has accounted for most of the recent reported hospitalizations.

This is unusual since, in typical flu seasons, the very young and very old are affected most frequently.

The Iowa Department of Public Health recommends that everyone over the age of six months be immunized.

Individuals seeking flu vaccinations traditionally drop off quickly after the end of November, because many people believe getting vaccinated after that time is too late.

“That’s simply not true,” said Horn Public Health Nurse Erin Dausel. “As long as flu viruses are circulating, people can get sick. We know flu activity generally peaks in January or February and lasts into the spring, so it is definitely not too late to get a vaccination.”

It takes about two weeks after vaccination for the body’s immune response to provide protection.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends annual influenza vaccination for everyone six months and older. Anyone who has not yet been vaccinated this season should get an in luenza vaccine now.

While the flu vaccine is the best defense against getting in f, it’s also important to take personal actions to help prevent the spread of illness.

Remember the 3Cs: Cover your coughs and sneezes; Clean your hands frequently; and Contain germs by staying home when ill.
