Richland #1 open for Creek Days
The Rural Legacy Project’s Steering Committee would like to have to you take a look inside the Richland #1 School House building on Second Street during Saturday’s Creek Days in Odebolt. Of course, it’s nowhere near to being finished, but there is a subfloor in the building so that you can step inside to take a look. We’d like you to see the well-done construction that was accomplished in 1883 when the building was built.
The roof and shingles have been repaired and replaced. There are the new windows looking out toward Main Street’s Green Space and toward Maple Street. There is a newly poured sidewalk and entrance pad, and an 1880s vintage door will greet you as you enter.
To help you envision where we are headed with the rest of the restoration, there is a model which has been prepared to demonstrate how we plan for the interior room to look. There is still much to do, but we have come a long way since the October moving day to Odebolt.
We will be on hand at the Pancake Breakfast Saturday morning and later at the school building selling the books, Iowa’s Rural School System – A Lost Treasure by Sandra Kessler Host and Iowa’s Rural Settlement – Shaped by Railroads and a System of Rural Schools by Dr. Dorothy (Dee) Kessler Engstrom. Both books feature the Richland #1 School. - Carol Raasch
