Memorial Day Services

Odebolt American Legion Roose Post #313 will conduct Memorial Day services at the Odebolt Cemetery at 11:15 a. m.   The program includes a flag raising, playing of the national anthem by the O-A/BC-IG Middle School Band and presentation of colors.

Marine Corps Sergeant Major Larry Fineran of Odebolt will be the guest speaker. Fineran is currently based in Okinawa.  The Legion Auxiliary will lay a wreath and read the names on the Avenue of Flags. The color guard will fire a rifle salute.


Lake View RAGBRAI® welcomes food vendors

The Lake View RAGBRAI® committee is now accepting vendor applications for individuals, groups or organizations interested in selling food or commercial items to the thousands of bikers staying overnight in Lake View on Monday, July 23.  The community is seeking a variety of food vendors to ensure their overnight guests not only have a lot of food available to them, but a lot of cuisine options as well.

Fees for commercial and nonprofit vendors from outside the local school district are $750. The fee for nonprofit vendors within the school district is $250. The fee is also $250 for any commercial vendors that are Lake View businesses. Commercial vendors from outside the City of Lake View but within the school district will pay a $700 fee.

Vendor spaces will be 15 feet by 20 feet and additional space is available for purchase. A fully refundable cleanup deposit of $100 is also required. Additional fees for electricity may apply.

Dollars For Scholars: A total of 67 seniors at O-A/BC-IG High School applied for the O-A/BC-IG Dollars For Scholars scholarships this year and received a total of $206,501. This is the 18th year of providing scholarships to all graduating seniors who apply. (Courier photo by Beth Wolterman)

Kris Gunderson ends teaching chapter

Kris Gunderson of Odebolt is closing a chapter in her life when she retires from 30 years of teaching at the end of the school year.  She has been teaching children at O-A, Garner-Hayfield, Ida Grove and BC-IG for 30 years. Her retirement plans include spending time with her grandson, gardening, helping youth at her church, reading and traveling.

On Wednesday night May 23, 2013 Siouxland was pounded with strong storms. According to the National Weather Service chat,  there have been several reports of damage including; near Lake View in Sac County, IA law enforcement reported wind damage at 08:30 PM. There are reports of damage from east of Odebolt to near Early to the east side of Lake View. Numerous power poles down, roofs blown off of outbuildings, turkey and hog confinements, and boats thrown at a dealership.

We had three-quarters inch of rain in under 20 minutes.  Small hailstones hit on north side of house. Our hostas look a little ragged and we lost one branch.

ODEBOLT-ARTHUR/BATTLE CREEK-IDA GROVE: The Falcons return seven starters including second-team all-stater Cassidy Wilcke.   Wilcke, a Morningside recruit, hit .473 with a team-high 13 doubles and 21 RBIs. The senior lefthander posted a 10-10 record on the mound. Also returning for coach Kurt Brown (18th season) are all-conference performers Jensen Boger (366), a sophomore first baseman and Cheyenne Wilcke, a sophomore catcher, and Cassidy’s younger sister. Mallory Cates, a junior outfielder, is another all-conference performer returning from last season’s 17-12 squad.
