Promoting kindness and compassion—
O-A/BC-IG OFFERS RACHEL'S CHALLENGE PROGRAM

Rachel’s Challenge, a program promoting kindness and compassion, will be presented to K-12 students in all buildings at O-A/BC-IG Schools on Sept. 7.

This grant-funded program is part of the O-A/BC-IG Respect and Responsibility Initiative. The goal of the initiative is to promote a positive and caring school climate and to promote service-learning projects with a lasting impact on our schools and communities, while it enhances the academic achievement of students.

Rachel’s Challenge multimedia presentations will take place during the school day on Wednesday, Sept. 7. Rachel Scott was the first student shot at Columbine High School in 1999 and the story of her life has inspired millions of young people and children to change the way they treat others.

A similar evening presentation for parents and community members and leaders will be hosted at O-A/ BC-IG High School at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 7. Parents are encouraged to bring their children in grades six-12 with them to the program. Since the program does include coverage of the Columbine High School shootings, parents of younger children would want to use their own judgment before bringing them along.

The elementary programs during the school day do not mention the shootings or how Rachel died. They only talk about how Rachel chose to live and encourage students to start a chain reaction of kind and caring behavior.

FABRIC, THREADS WINNER NAMED
Arlene Fineran of Odebolt placed third in the crocheted baby afghan division of the fabric and threads contest at the 2011 Iowa State Fair. Exhibitors may enter any item using any technique eligible in the fabric and threads department. Items were displayed in the Knapp Varied Industries Building.
