Businesses contribute to mammo fund
Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove has received $620 from Jack and Jane Hogue of the Prairie Pedlar in Odebolt.
The donation was the result of their “Give and Grow” program, a personal effort they put forth to help community organizations raise cash for a cause. During May, customers who presented a “Give and Grow Coupon for Digital Mammography” helped Horn earn 10 percent of every dollar they spent.
“Board members Terri Carstensen and Deb Einspahr were instrumental in the success of this fundraiser,” comments Sarah Harm, Horn Memorial PR director. “They really championed this project by personally delivering the hundreds of coupons to businesses in our service area. We sincerely appreciate all of the support received from the communities as we continue to raise funds for the digital mammography unit.”
The Prairie Pedlar is just one of several businesses who have come forth to offer a percentage of sales from their business to help the hospital’s cause. Carol Auen, an independent Mary Kay beauty consultant from Odebolt, will be giving 10 percent of her sales back to Horn – “until the hospital reaches its goal.” Existing and new customers alike simply have to mention the digital mammography project and the purchase will qualify. Orders can be placed by going to her website at www.marykay.com/cauen and mention the hospital in the “comments” section.
Horn Memorial Hospital has currently raised just over $110,000 and need to be at the $300,000 mark before the unit can be ordered,” said Harm. If you are interested in supporting the hospital’s digital mammography project, contact Marc Augsburger, CEO at 712.364.3311.
Juveniles charged with reckless use of explosives
The Sac County Sheriff’s Office charged four juvenile males—two age 16, one age 15 and one age 14—with reckless use of explosives. Three of the juveniles are from Odebolt. The fourth is from Primghar.
On the afternoon of Monday, June 27, it is alleged that all four were in a motor vehicle and had made an explosive device with drain cleaner and aluminum foil. The device was thrown out of a vehicle in the 500 block of South Main Street in Odebolt where it exploded. Nothing was damaged and no one was injured.
All four juveniles were located by sheriff’s deputies and transported to the Sac County Sheriff’s Office. It was also determined that prior to throwing out the homemade explosive device in Odebolt, the four had thrown several others out in rural Sac County.
Reckless use of explosives is a serious misdemeanor. All four were released to their parents pending an appearance with juvenile court authorities. The sheriff’s department did not release the names of the juveniles. Sheriff Ken McClure’s policy is to only release the names if the charge is a felony.
