ODEBOLT ALL-SCHOOL BANQUET IS JUNE 17
Plans are being made for the all-school banquet and program for alumni of Odebolt High School and Odebolt-Arthur High School Friday, June 17. A catered dinner is planned from 5 to 7 p.m., followed by the program at 7:30 p.m. There won’t be an alumni band this year. The all-school reunion is held in conjunction with Odebolt Creek Days June 18 and 19.
The program will feature Charlie Ferguson (1968 alumnus, 2007 Iowa Rock ‘n Roll Music Association Hall of Fame) and band. Sandra (Kessler) Host will talk about the restoration of the old Richland #1 Country School House and plans to have it moved to downtown Odebolt.
The Fifth Generation was a Carroll band started in 1964. Bernie Gronstal and Mark Brenny started out as The Dynamics and later became The Fifth Generation. Their first song list included such tunes as “Louie, Louie,” “Gloria” and “Hang On Sloopy.” In later years their repertoire included psychedelic, fuzz tone, echo and wah wah.
From 1964-67 the band featured Gronstal on drums, Brenny on bass, Steve Volk on guitar and Daryl Stalzer on lead vocals. In 1967 Ferguson joined the band as a keyboard player and vocalist. In late 1968 the group recorded “Caroline,” an original song written by members of the band. The flip side was Jimi Hendrix’ tune “Purple Haze.” At the height of their career in 1969 the band performed at the Roof Garden, Cobblestone, Pla Mor, Starline, Val Air and many other clubs and dance venues over a multi-state area. They also played in Bill Riley’s Battle of the Bands, The Clique, The Place and the Iowa State Fair Teen Town. They opened for Zager & Evans of “In The Year 2525,” The Buckinghams and also The Neighborhood who had the hit “Big Yellow Taxi.” All total, they played more than 500 gigs. In 2007, Fifth Generation was inducted into the Iowa Rock n Roll Hall of Fame.

IDA, SAC COUNTY CATTLEMEN TO GRILL FOR OA/BC-IG PROM AND "EVENING FOR EDUCATION'
O-A/BC-IG’s seniors, juniors, guests and attending faculty will enjoy dinner at the 2011 prom, featuring beef as the main entrée.
Both the Sac and Ida County Cattlemen’s Associations will be donating their time and grills for the Saturday, April 9, prom. They will grill beef shoulder tenders, taken off the grill, sliced into medallions and then plated with a brown gravy drizzle. They are working with Brenda Mace, “Aunt B’s” in Arthur to complete the threecourse meal.
Kevin and Terri Carstensen of Odebolt (both hold state and national offices on the Beef Council) helped coordinate the efforts to include beef, farm grown and locally produced, on this year’s prom menu. The junior class overwhelmingly chose steak for their main course and, with the two county organizations’ assistance, they will be enjoying, “Beef, it’s what’s for dinner!”
Sunday night’s adult prom, “An Evening for Education” will also benefit from the local county cattlemen’s association’s volunteer efforts. The “O-A/ BC-IG’s Dollars for Scholars” Sunday night dinner, April 10, will also feature a beef steak entrée. Jamboree Foods of Odebolt, owners Rob and Cindy Germann, will prepare the beef for the grill (each night) and again, Aunt B’s will cater the three courses. Both events’ organizers express appreciation for the assistance of the Ida and Sac County Cattlemen’s Associations.
