Sixty-two Iowa farmers and farm families were recognized for their commitment to healthy soils and improved water quality. The awards were sponsored by the Iowa Governor’s office, Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
The awards recognize farmers who serve as local leaders in environmental stewardship by utilizing a variety of techniques and best management practices. Examples include conservation tillage, restoring wetlands, installing grass waterways and using precision agriculture, among other things.

Century farms recognized
Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey recognized Century and Heritage Farm families during a ceremony at the Iowa State Fair again this year. To qualify, a family must have owned at least 40 acres for 100 years or more to be a Century Farm and 150 years or more to be a Heritage Farm. This year, 365 Century Farms and 67 Heritage Farms were recognized. Area families recognized with Century Farm awards were: Jeanne Wissink Andreson and Jimmy and Carolyn Hilker of Ida Grove; George and Darlene Franzkowiak of Arthur; Merlin and Susan Jensen of Holstein and Vernon Jr. and Kay Volkmann of Battle Creek.
Also, Larry Berg and Walter and Janie Miller of Kiron; James Young of Galva; and Buehler Farms (Roger and Duane); and Ronald and Jeannine Lange of Odebolt.
“It is a great pleasure and distinct honor to help recognize these farm families who have owned the same farm for 100 or 150 years. It is a testament to the values of land stewardship, hard work, patience, dedication and perseverance that are found in Iowa’s farm families,” Northey said.
Sac County Quilt-A-Fair much more than quilts
The Sac County Quilt-A-Fair on Sept. 21-22, from 9 a. m. to 4 p. m., features so much more than quilts. For people who love quilts, there will be around 500 on the fairgrounds, including 375 entries, and hundreds of others brought by the speakers and vendors.
For people who prefer tractors to quilts, there is a Sac County Tractor Ride along the barn quilt trail in Sac County on Saturday, Sept. 21.
For those who enjoy classic cars, the green space on the Sac County fairgrounds will be filled with autos on Sunday, Sept. 22.
And for everyone who enjoys food, the Kiwanis Food Stand on the fairgrounds will offer several kinds of sandwiches, pie and ice cream, root beer floats and other drinks. The Knights of Columbus in Sac City will host a waffle breakfast on Sunday, Sept. 22.
Eighteen vendors will have quilt-related merchandise for sale in the 4-H and open class buildings, as well as in the gazebo.
Linda Sleight of Odebolt has been coordinating the vendor arrangements. She said, “We know that quilters and non-quilters alike will enjoy seeing all the new products, holiday decorating ideas, projects and materials that the vendors will bring to Sac City. Some of the vendors will also have sample quilts for sale.”
Several of the vendors have specialty products, such as patterns, quilting machines, frames for displaying quilts, yarn for knitting, quilt-related pottery and scrapbooking supplies.
There will also be a vendor with barn quilts for sale, as well as other items for the yard and garden.
A new opportunity will be available at the 2013 show for people to have their scissors or rotary blades sharpened while they enjoy the rest of the festival.
The featured speaker for the show is Cynthia Hickok of Houston, Texas. Hickok is an internationally recognized fiber artist who grew up in Sac City, studied art at Iowa State University and went on to create amazing works of art from thread.
Some of her work will be displayed, and she will be presenting at 2 p. m. each day of the show, with photos, examples of her work in progress and many opportunities for people to see how she creates her art.
Numerous other presentations and workshops are planned. More information about the quilt show is available at www.barnquilts.com.
