Benefit Concert featuring Tangled Blue, August 4th

On Sunday evening, August 4th, Bethel Lutheran Church of Kiron and Faith Lutheran Church of Odebolt, will be hosting an outdoor benefit concert at Faith Lutheran Church, 708 Locust Street, featuring Tangled Blue.

Tangled Blue (Aimee and Joel Pakan) live in the twin cities and have participated in many and various types of youth gatherings, as well as at church camps and congregations, here in the US and around the world.

There is no admission for the evening which will begin at 4:30 p.m. with games, a simple meal at 5:00 p.m., with the concert beginning at 5:30.

We will have a free will offering which will be split between two outreach ministries that impact our communities and some of the surrounding communities, The Back Pack Ministry and the Community Basket Mobile Food Pantry.  Both of these important ministries focus on those families and children in our communities who struggle with food insecurity on a daily basis.

The Back Pack Ministry is beginning its third year and strives to help the students in the Odebolt site of the OA-BCIG Community School District with nutritious snack items for the weekend. They register for the program at the school with the number of children and then on Friday they stop in the office and pick up their backpack which will contain the following items:  instant oatmeal or oatmeal bar, cereal, fruit drink, peanut butter or cheese crackers, granola bar, fruit cup, and pudding (other items are included at various times), and then they return the backpack on Monday to the school office. The only criteria is that they qualify for reduced or free meals. They may register for this program when they register for school or by contacting Pastor Trish at 668-4515.

The Community Basket Mobile Food Pantry will celebrating its first year anniversary in September. Due to changes in social services in our area because of budget cuts it was felt that there was a need for a way to reach out to those who struggle with food insecurity in our communities. Working with Sioux Land Food Bank the mobile pantry came into being through the direction of the Ida County Ministerial and the Odebolt, Arthur, Kiron Ministerial.

The communities that make up the Community Basket are Arthur, Battle Creek, Galva, Holstein, Ida Grove, Kiron and Odebolt. Each community has a community representative which will take delivery orders for those who absolutely cannot make it to the distribution site. The representatives are also responsible for posting the fliers in their communities. The mobile pantry rotates each month to a new community on the 3rd Thursday of each month with the doors opening at 4:30 p.m.

In addition to the mobile pantry we also are blessed to have a site pantry located underneath and in the back of the Medical Arts Building in Ida Grove. The site pantry is stocked with donations from area congregations and communities and the items not distributed at the mobile site.

A household may use the mobile pantry and then they may use the site pantry once a month. For reporting purposes and record keeping names are taken at the site pantry.  At the mobile site we only ask the number in the household (adults and children), if they are above or below the guidelines set by the government, if they used the site pantry the last month, and what community they are from.

So come and enjoy an evening of music and stories and support these two important ministries that are making an impact on our community. For more information call 746-4515.
