Flag Flies High on Herring Hilltop
Ninety-five years ago a 40-foot wooden flag pole was erected in the rural town of Herring, Iowa on November 10, 1918, the eve of Armistice Day.
On Friday, July 12, 2013 the families of Ralph and Alice Dean (former residents of Herring) organized a re-dedication of the Herring flag pole. This effort was led by family member Jim Hoft.
In order to preserve the old flagpole a new pole was erected close by. A special area with benches and flowers surrounds the location and provides visitors a place to sit and reminisce.
Herring was located about six miles southwest of Wall Lake, in the foothills of the Boyer River valley. (near the junction of County Road M55 and 387th Street - editor)
