O-A/BC-IG Foundation selling tickets for
‘Evening for Education’

The O-A/BC-IG Dollars for Scholars Foundation Board announces its fourth annual “Evening for Education” on Sunday, April 21, at Skate Palace in Ida Grove.

Those attending will enjoy the festive setting from the previous night’s junior-senior prom. The meal and dessert will be served tableside by O-A/BC-IG High School students (and future scholarship recipients).

The reception starts at 5 p. m., with dinner at 6 p. m. and entertainment at 7:30 p. m. Following the meal will be a live auction and the results of the silent auction. Entertainment features an a cappella vocal group “Home Free,” with a musical style they call an eclectic mix of everything. Suggested attire is business or casual business.

All proceeds will fund the scholarships provided each year to O-A/BC-IG seniors who apply for foundation scholarships. Last year, a total of 69 O-A/BC-IG graduates received $186,069.

Paul Neumann, O-A/BC-IG Dollars for Scholars Foundation chairman, said, “This is a great opportunity for the members of all the O-A/BC-IG’s whole-grade sharing communities to come together for a common cause.”

Table sponsorships are available by contacting Neumann at 712-369-0035 and are available at three levels— Silver, Purple and Black for tables of 12, 10 and eight with reserved seating. Single-seat tickets are also available for $40 a person.

Tickets are available from Neumann and other board members: Becky Ricklefs, Rita Freese, Evelyn Lawhead, Marcia Cates, Lorraine Johnson, Mike Rickert, Linda Burk and Tammie Dausel. The board is also asking for items to be donated for the live and silent auctions.

Donations for the live and silent auctions can be given to any of the foundation members or by calling 712-365-0035.

All tickets must be purchased in advance.

Happiness Express to present melodrama

The Happiness Express Chorus, under the direction of Rod Schneider of Ida Grove, returns to the Denison High School Fine Arts Center on Saturday, April 13, 7 p. m., for its production of “Dire Days at the Dairy: A Barbershop Melodrama.”

While most amateur vocal groups do concerts, the Happiness Express takes it to another level, creating a show package that includes a lot of humor. Some liken it to the old vaudeville routines.

“This year’s production is an old-time melodrama that involves a struggling dairy farm, a dastardly villain, a poor widow and her daughter, and, of course, a hero and his sidekick to save the day,” said Schneider. “We are doing it as an imaginary radio broadcast. Since chorus members read all of the parts, the widow and her daughter will both have a mustache, which adds to the hilarity.”

All aspects of the show package, including theme, script and costuming, are developed by members of the chorus. The package can be adjusted to it other performances throughout the year.

The chorus recently donated $3,700 to the vocal music departments of 10 area high schools and two vocal music workshop programs. Included were Ridge View and OA/BC-IG High Schools.

“Show patrons and local business sponsors have been very supportive in past years, so the chorus decided to return a portion of our spring show pro it to the communities in which our members live,” said Schneider. “It’s part of our mission to enrich lives through singing.”

Tickets may be purchased from area chorus members: Rod Schneider (364-3788), Jerry Einspahr (830-7337) or Kevin McFarland (371-3501).

The Happiness Express is the performing a cappella chorus of the Denison Barbershop Harmony Society. Its members come from within a 60-mile radius of Denison.

Now in its 49th year, the group welcomes men who enjoy singing as a hobby. The group meets each Monday at 7:30 p. m. at the Denison High School vocal room, 819 N. 16th St.
