Supporting our Community

News from Faith Lutheran Church Newsletter, "Parish Visitor"

SENIOR GROCERY DELIVERY SERVICES

A new ministry of Faith Lutheran Church of Odebolt is Grocery Delivery Services. The seniors citizens in our community and shut-ins will be able to call the church between 9:00-4:00 on Monday and Wednesdays and place their order for groceries. The groceries will be picked up on Wednesday evening or Thursday morning and delivered on Thursday.

The cost will be a $5.00 delivery fee (to cover cost of gas) in addition to the cost of the groceries.  The service will begin the week of January 29th.

If you would like to be a part of this exciting ministry you may contact Brenda Manmiller at 712-371-3659 or 668-2809.  Faith Lutheran hopes that this will be a useful service for the community, especially now that the grocery store is closing.

BACKPACK MINISTRY

Another Faith Lutheran ministry is the Backpack Ministry, which has become vital to some families in our community.  Each week bags are packed with nutritious snacks for the weekend and delivered to the school. A member of the family picks up the backpack and then returns it on Monday.

Food items and cash from outside the congregation have been received as well as many great comments about the program in the community. We ask for continued help from the community to support this ministry.

If you would like to donate items here is a sample of items that can be donated:  Instant Oatmeal, Individual Cereal Boxes, Fruit Cups, Applesauce, Granola Bars, Fruit Bars, Fruit Drinks (100% fruit juice), Peanut Butter or Cheese Crackers, Peanuts or Nuts. Other nutritious items can also be added to the bags.

As of right now we are serving 23 youth, so we go through the items quickly.

Contact Faith Lutheran for information on where and when to drop off items.

SOUP ON SUNDAY

Soup on Sunday (SOS) is in its third year in Odebolt. It began as an outreach ministry through the local ministerial association and has grown. This past Sunday there were 60 some served along with about 25-30 take out or deliveries.

Last year Kiron’s congregations also began doing SOS once a month, and this year Arthur Evangelical Free will be doing one on February 19th at 6:00 p.m.. This happens as each congregation works together to change their community.

Thank you for your support!

ECUMENICAL SKATING PARTY

This year the skating party is scheduled for February 19th from 4:30-6:30. The cost for this event is $5.00 per person, if you would like to participate but do not have the funds available please check with Pastor Trish Underberg of Faith Lutheran, or any other area pastor. It should be a great time so plan on joining us for an afternoon of fun.

GRIEF GROUPS

Iowa Hospice is once again doing a community Faith Based Grief Group. Meetings will on Monday evenings from 6:30-7:30 at Faith Lutheran Church.  This is open to any member of the community who is struggling with loss. Our loss may not be from death but also from other situations, such as broken relationships. The group will be facilitated by Melanie Hickey,  Iowa Hospice,  and Pastor Trish Underberg - Pastor of Bethel and Faith Lutheran Church.

Faith Based Grief Group will meet on Feb. 27th, March 5th and 12th 6:30-7:30 p.m. at Faith Lutheran.

Jungle Journey is an event for youth who have experienced loss. The group will look at how grief happens and that there really isn’t a right or wrong way to grieve and that each person comes to it uniquely.

Jungle Journey will be on Tuesday, February 6th at 3:30 at the Odebolt Public Library.
